Zones of Progress: The Past, Present and Future of Special Economic Zones
This documentary tells the fascinating story of Special Economic Zones: geographically demarcated areas of countries where different rules and regulations apply. There are more than 7,000 of these across the world, and they have helped shape the development path of countries as diverse as Ireland, China, and the UAE. This documentary explores how they originated, how some of the leading modern zones function, and what the future of these zones could be.

    Great work! Well documented and explained. SEZ should be created not only in developing countries but also in free and democratic developed countries, like the U.K.. The benefits are obvious and long lasting. If successfully implemented, it can be replicated in different parts of the country. SEZ is forwarding looking, innovative, entrepreneurial, trend setting bringing about high growth and new economic directions. For a new SEZ to be created nowadays, there are other elements which should be embraced like lifestyle, sustainability, community, neighborhood and fostering of younger generations etc.

    I can't wait to see NEOM, the largest business deal in history, $500 billion. Hopefully soon America can be converted also, large democratic states have ruined our great cities. Fortunately I think that state governments are going to be at the center of big changes in the near future.

    Some people are experimenting with moveable marine permaculture.... Imagine an oil rig with permaculture on top... marine permaculture below barnacules grown for food... kelp forests below... sheltering fish... the wave motion bringing up nutrients from the deep. above the water chickens... Above the chickens pigs... Imagine starting on one continent with fingerling fish... that are ready for market after you cross....

    Blockchain over Bitcoin.... Bitcoin is great but it is not perfect... slow... privacy issues... but most important... it really doesn't do anything. Gold, Silver, Bitcoin, don't have babies... They just sit there... If you invest in companies... they can invest in capital goods... capital goods make things... Bitcoin is useless... but if you can add smart contracts and DAO's then cryptocurrecies can actually do things, things you would othwise be paying people to do.

    L2 payments, by institutional payment providers 🤔 Imagine if some of those early Bitcoin Adopters are big blockers, sell their Segwit BTC and buy Bitcoin Cash There will be about 141,000 Mt Gox BCH and BTC returned to early Bitcoiners. Something not discussed openly is how might those early Bitcoin adopters view the Blocksize Wars and the changes made to BTC ? Could we see some BTC selling into BCH ? Will BCH coins be sold ? Given the bigger rise in BCH vs BTC price over the past year that seems unlikely Until coins are distributed all people can do is speculate but it could be very good for BCH

    Moving to a "free city" or some planned community is just begging for trouble in a police state. It's getting together in a big group to make targeting easier. To do any good parallel structures have to run all through society with the goal of reducing reliance on the co-opted institutions of that society.

    Somehow these free cities lectures seem very statist. Also, they all need to read the book "Presentation Zen" because they're boring and I don't really understand what they're talking about. What's the 'free city' part in all of this?

      Buyers expect the founder to do all the work for them. I'm a developer that's been doing this for a decade and the fact is that people pretend to be rugged pioneers on the internet and then cry when they actually have to lift a finger for themselves in reality.

    • @sondreb
      @sondreb 3 місяці тому

      Liberstad is probably the least over-planned free cities projects, but we have a different ownership model for the central parts of the free city, compared to some other projects. I know Montelibero in Montenegro fairly well and they have more people involved and are doing certain things more decentralized. It's all about initiative by the participants and owners, if people engage in the free cities, they will gain freedom and autonomy to do great things. Things does not emerge by itself, there needs to be committed individuals. What is important then, is to have the flexibility to adapt to new condition and new collaborators who want to help make the project successful.

    Hong Kong is really a terrible model for free cities. It's basically a concrete jungle with zero culture. The historic architecture is being demolished and it doesn't look any different from any other Chinese city. It's full of British finance guys in pink shirts (what's with pink?) drinking beer after their wage slave day. Ok, so they're making money. So what? Is that it?

    The idea of proprietary communities, was first proposed by Henry George, an American economist and social theorist who lived in the late 19th century. It was a Georgist named Spencer Heath who contributed to the idea of proprietary communities. He was an industrialist and a Georgist who made enough money during World War I to retire early and devote his later years to ideas. He helped fund the Henry George School in New York and taught there for several years before being asked to leave by Frank Chodorov. Heath’s insight was that government could be removed from Georgism. A proprietor could replace the government, overcoming moral and public choice problems. His thoughts are compiled in his book, Citadel, Market and Altar. Mr. Gebel is responsible for bringing those ideas out of speculation and into the real world.
